Watch for Post-Op Dysplasia in Ulcerative Colitis Patients

April 30, 2012

FEATURED SEARCH TERM:   ulcerative colitis

Ulcerative colitis patients with chronic pouchitis after restorative proctocolectomy are at risk of dysplasia and need to be monitored regularly. Dysplasia was significantly higher in patients with severe inflammation in this study of more than 275 UC patients. The article gives recommendations for standard followup in these cases.

RESULT: Pouchitis may increase the risk of dysplasia after restorative proctocolectomy in patients with ulcerative colitis

Fecoflowmetry shows UC patients with an ileal pouch-anal anastomosis have improved defecatory function and good long-term outcome after the surgery. In this small study, there was no improvement in clinical score or tolerance volume 1 year or more after ileal pouch-anal anastomosis, but the value of the maximum fecal stream flow rate improved with time.

RESULT: Postoperative defecatory function of an ileal pouch-anal anastomosis after a restorative proctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis: evaluation using fecoflowmetry.
