There is an urgent need to evaluate the surgical interventions used in trigeminal neuralgia, according to a Cochrane Summary of 11 studies including about 500 patients. Current procedures, both ablative and non-ablative, relieve pain, and some patients are able to stop taking medications, but many end up with sensory side effects.

This may help: A novel method of analyzing microstructural changes accurately detects the effects of focal radiosurgery in the trigeminal nerve. This small study found that trigeminal tractography provides more information than two-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging and can detect unique, focal changes after radiosurgery.
