Although there’s growing evidence of the benefits of palliative care in oncology – improvements in symptoms and quality of life, survival outcomes, and cost of care – to date there is little guidance about best practices for oncologists interested in incorporating it into their practices. In this article, authors from 4 diverse types of oncology practices in the US provide insights and examples from pioneering efforts in palliative care. Their analysis includes a discussion of the financial impact on providers.

Access to palliative care in American hospitals is improving, according to this news report. In 7 states and the District of Columbia, more than 80% of hospitals now have palliative care programs. But barriers to access continue, including the common misperception that palliative care is equivalent to a terminal prognosis, as well as a shortage of trained professionals and training programs.
