A patient education program that incorporates positive thinking can help African Americans with hypertension adhere to their medication. In this randomized controlled trial, those who received small gifts and bimonthly telephone calls to help incorporate positive thoughts into daily routines were more likely to take their medication over a year’s time than others who did not receive this encouragement.

Mood disorders are known to impair a hypertensive patient's desire and ability to follow doctor's orders. This longitudinal cohort study found that mild depression and anxiety increased the risk of hypertension patients not adhering to their medication. The authors suggest screening people with hypertension for symptoms of anxiety and depression.
