Studies of cognitive behavior therapy treatment in depression have been criticized for ignoring degrees of mental illness among subjects. This randomized study answered the question by assessing the severity of mental disability among subjects who had both diabetes and depression. According to the report below, Web-based diabetes-specific cognitive behavioral therapy works well to treat even those diabetes patients who have severe mental health problems including comorbid anxiety disorders.

The diabetes may affect the course of mental illness. For instance, adding diabetes to depression doubles the risk of later dementia, as compared to that of depressed people in the general population. The authors of this study examined the question using data from a large diabetes registry over a 3-5 year period.
